Support Services
We are here to help you navigate life after stroke.
The Carmarthen Stroke Club provides a range of services designed to offer practical help and emotional support to those affected by stroke. All our services are provided free of charge to members.
Peer Support Groups
Our core service is bringing people together. Meeting others who have walked a similar path is incredibly powerful. Our peer support groups provide a safe, non-judgmental environment to share experiences, exchange coping strategies, and build lasting friendships.
What to expect: Weekly facilitated meetings where members share their stories, discuss challenges, celebrate progress, and support one another. Topics range from practical advice on daily living to emotional well-being.
Family & Carer Support
A stroke affects the whole family. We provide specific advice and respite opportunities for carers and family members, helping them to manage their own well-being while supporting their loved ones.
Services include: Carer support groups, respite during club activities, advice on accessing carer benefits and support services, and connection to local carer networks.
Information & Advice
Navigating the post-stroke landscape can be confusing. We offer guidance on available resources, benefits, and local healthcare services to ensure you get the help you are entitled to.
We can help with: Understanding benefit entitlements (PIP, Attendance Allowance), accessing NHS services, finding equipment and aids, and connecting with specialist stroke services.
Emotional Well-being
Depression and anxiety are common after a stroke. Our club focuses on improving mental health through social interaction, recreational activities, and a compassionate community atmosphere. While we're not therapists, we understand the emotional toll of stroke recovery and provide a supportive environment where it's okay to express your feelings.
Additional Support We Provide
Rehabilitation Support
While we don't provide clinical rehabilitation, we complement NHS services by offering community-based activities that support ongoing recovery, including gentle exercise classes and cognitive activities.
Communication Support
For members with aphasia or other communication difficulties, we provide a patient, understanding environment. We use communication aids and techniques to ensure everyone can participate.
Befriending Service
For members who cannot attend our meetings regularly, we offer a befriending service with telephone support and occasional home visits from trained volunteers.
Transport Assistance
Getting to our meetings can be a challenge. We coordinate transport for members who need it, ensuring accessibility is never a barrier to participation.
Signposting
We maintain strong links with other local and national stroke organizations and can direct you to specialist services for speech therapy, occupational therapy, and more.
Advocacy
Sometimes you need someone in your corner. We can support you in accessing services, understanding your rights, and navigating complex systems.
